Claim of US Patent No. 10,925,147

1. A method comprising:receiving, from a treatment planning process, information that is determined by iterating through different combinations of parameters of a particle beam and configurations of an adaptive aperture, the information comprising configurations of the adaptive aperture for trimming at least some selected spots of the particle beam prior to the particle beam reaching a treatment area of an irradiation target; and
configuring the adaptive aperture based on the information, the information being based on where spots are to be formed on the irradiation target, and where configuring the adaptive aperture comprises moving a position of a primary carriage on the adaptive aperture, moving a position of one or more secondary carriages on the adaptive aperture, and extending or retracting one or more leaves on one or more of the secondary carriages, where at least one of the secondary carriages or the primary carriage is moved based on where a spot is to be formed on the irradiation target, and where the adaptive aperture comprises:
the secondary carriages that are movable in a first dimension,
each of the secondary carriages comprising leaves that are extendible and retractable relative to a secondary carriage and that are dynamically configurable during movement of the particle beam across at least part of a treatment field to produce shapes for trimming the at least some selected spots of the particle beam prior to the particle beam reaching the irradiation target; and
the primary carriage to which the secondary carriages are coupled, the primary carriage being movable in a second dimension that is different from the first dimension.
