1. A transmitter configured to serve a cell, the transmitter comprising:one or more processing elements; and
one or more memories having program instructions stored thereon that are executable by the one or more processing elements to cause the transmitter to:
transmit, via an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless communication system having a system bandwidth, at least a synchronization channel, wherein the synchronization channel comprises a primary synchronization channel and a secondary synchronization channel, wherein the primary synchronization channel is modulated by at least one primary synchronization sequence, and wherein the at least one primary synchronization sequence is a sequence selected from a set of two or more possible primary synchronization sequences common to multiple cells of a wireless communications system;
wherein the secondary synchronization channel is transmitted three OFDM symbols prior to each transmission of the primary synchronization channel.
