receiving, by the gaming server from the portable computing device, the code via a text message, wherein the text message is received from the portable computing device through a messaging server via one of the following: a short message service (SMS), an enhanced messaging service (EMS), and a multimedia messaging service (MMS); determining whether the player won the random reward based on the received code at time of receipt of the code and the player meeting at least one winning predetermined condition;
transmitting, from the gaming server to the user computing device, a notification indicating whether the player won the random reward at the time of receipt of the code; and
causing to be displayed, on a display of the gaming machine, a secondary game associated with the random reward in response to determining that the player won the random reward.

determine that a first unfolding of the first instance of the unfolding symbol should occur based on a first probability;
identify a currently hidden expanded play area based on the first position being adjacent to the border of the active play area, the expanded play area located outside of the border of the active play area; and
control the display device to display an updated active play area, the updated active play area including both the initial active play area and the expanded play area.

evaluate the first bingo card and the second bingo card against a ball call;
identify, based upon the evaluation, a first winning pattern on the first bingo card;
identify, based upon the evaluation, a second winning pattern on the second bingo card;
compare the first winning pattern to the second winning pattern;
determine, based upon the comparison, which of the first winning pattern or the second winning pattern is associated with a greater award;
one of i) designate the first game presentation object as first in an order-of-finish if the first winning pattern is associated with the greater award, or ii) designate the second game presentation object as first in the order-of-finish if the second game presentation object is associated with the greater award; and

in response to the at least one first pattern satisfying the predetermined first threshold, identifying, by the processor, at least one second position that includes the first symbol in a second play area, the second play area separate from the first play area and including a plurality of second positions arranged in a plurality of second columns, the second play area being displayed on the display device, each second position of the plurality of second positions associated with a respective symbol of the plurality of symbols;
in response to identifying the at least one second position, replacing, by the processor, the first symbol included in the second position in the separate second play area with a second symbol, wherein the first symbol included in the first position in the first play area is not replaced with any other symbol, and wherein the second symbol is different from the first symbol;
evaluating, by the processor, a first outcome of the first play area and a second outcome of the second play area after the replacing;
determining, by the processor, an award amount based on the first outcome and the second outcome;
increasing the credit balance based at least in part on the award amount; and
in response to receipt of a second input via the input interface of the gaming machine, causing, via a cashout device, an initiation of a payout associated with the credit balance.

in response to determining that the plurality of free play outcomes include a non-winning free play outcome and at least one winning free play outcome:
display, via the presentation device, during the free play bonus mode, the at least one winning free play outcome, wherein each of the at least one winning free play outcome is displayed with a winning symbol combination overlaid over a colored screen displayed on the presentation device; and
update the credit balance based, at least in part, on the at least one winning free play outcome; or
in response to determining that the plurality of free play outcomes do not include at least one winning free play outcome and only include non-winning free play outcomes, suppress a graphical representation of the free play bonus mode, wherein the graphical representation of the free play bonus mode is distinguished by the colored screen displayed on the presentation device associated with and indicative of the free play bonus mode, and wherein during suppression of the graphical representation of the free play bonus mode, the colored screen is not displayed, whereby, when the colored screen is not displayed, no indication is provided to a player that the free play bonus mode was initiated.
