1. A mobile storage system for use along a support, surface devoid of any floor mounted guide rails, comprising: a plurality
of movable carriages each having a first side frame and a second side frame and extending laterally between a first end and
a second end, each mobile carriage including a first drive motor positioned near the first end of the mobile carriage and
a second drive motor positioned near the second end of the mobile carriage, each movable carriage including a plurality of
support wheels that support the carriage directly on the support surface; a control unit for controlling the movement of the
mobile carriages along the support surface; and a guidance system in communication with the control unit to determine the
position of the mobile carriage along the support surface as the mobile carriage moves along the support surface, wherein
the guidance system includes a magnetic strip mounted to the support surface to define a movement path for the mobile carriages,
a magnetic sensor located on each of the mobile carriages to detect the magnetic strip, a first distance sensor positioned
at the first end of the mobile carriage and operable to detect a first distance from the first side frame to stationary target
and a second distance sensor positioned at the second end of the mobile carriage and operable to detect a second distance
from the first side frame to the stationary target; wherein each of the magnetic sensors are mounted to a support plate having
a hinged first end and a movable second end such that the support plate pivots about the first end to maintain a generally
constant distance between the magnetic sensor and the magnetic strip; and wherein the control unit controls the operation
of the first and second drive motors to maintain the position of the mobile carriage along the magnetic strip based on a detection
signal from the magnetic sensor and to maintain the orientation of the first end and the second end of the carriage by maintaining
the first and second distances equal to each other.

1. A mobile rack system movable along a floor of a storage location, comprising:
at least one multi-rack unit including a first storage rack and a second storage rack, each of the first and second storage
racks including a plurality of vertical uprights;

a drive motor operable to move the multi-rack unit along the floor; and
a plurality of couplers extending between one of the uprights of the first storage rack and one of the uprights of the second
storage rack to secure the first and second storage racks to each other while allowing relative movement therebetween, wherein
each of the couplers comprises:

a coupling bracket attached to a first upright of the first storage rack, the coupling bracket including a coupling plate
and at least one coupling tab unitarily formed with and perpendicular to the coupling plate;

a movement bracket attached to a second upright of the second storage rack and having at least one movement slot sized to
receive the coupling tab to allow the coupling tab to move therein; and

a receiving bracket attached to the first upright of the first storage rack and having at least one receiving slot sized to
receive the coupling tab, wherein the movement bracket is movably positioned between the coupling bracket and the receiving
bracket and the coupling tab passes through the movement slot and into the receiving slot.

1. A mobile storage system, comprising:a plurality of movable storage units, wherein each of the storage units includes a local control unit and a local control panel, wherein the local control panel allows a user to manually enter control commands to move the storage unit;
a master controller in communication with the plurality of local control units of the plurality of movable storage units;
a wireless transceiver in communication with the master controller to receive and transmit messages from the master controller; and
a user device including a display that allows the user to enter commands and view control images related to the mobile storage system, wherein the user device is in wireless communication with the master controller such that the user controls operation of the mobile storage system through the user device,
wherein when the user device and the master controller have created a wireless connection, the master controller disables each of the local control panels and prevents a wireless connection with another user device.
