1. An apparatus for making a mat or sheet of nanostructures each having an elongated axis comprising:a. at least one surface with a boundary along a flow path which a dispersion of elongated nanostructures and fluid can flow;
b. a flow generator controllable to generate a fluid flow effective to promote preferential alignment of the nanostructures in the flow; and
c. an agglomeration or aggregation component operatively associated with the boundary which isolates the nanostructures into a layer;
d. so that the layer can be processed into a free-standing mat or sheet.
