1. A system for printing at least a portion of a three-dimensional (3D) object adjacent to a support, comprising:a source of at least one feedstock;
a support for supporting said at least said portion of said 3D object during formation;
a feeder for directing said at least one feedstock from said source and in contact with said support;
a power supply for flowing electrical current through said at least one feedstock and said support; and
a controller operatively coupled to said power supply, wherein said controller:
(i) receives in computer memory a computational representation of said 3D object,
(ii) subsequent to receiving said computational representation of said 3D object, uses said feeder to direct said at least one feedstock from said source and in contact with said support,
(iii) upon said feeder directing said at least one feedstock in contact with said support, directs said power supply to flow said electrical current through said at least one feedstock and said support while said at least one feedstock is in contact with said support,
(iv) subjects said at least one feedstock to Joule heating upon flow of electrical current through said at least one feedstock and said support, which Joule heating is sufficient to melt at least a portion of said at least one feedstock, such that said at least said portion of said at least one feedstock deposits adjacent to said support, wherein a size of said at least said portion of said at least one feedstock is controllable relative to said feedstock during deposition, thereby printing said at least said portion of said 3D object in accordance with said computational representation of said 3D object.

1. A system for printing at least a portion of a three-dimensional (3D) object adjacent to a support, comprising:a source of at least one feedstock;

(iv) subjects said at least one feedstock to Joule heating upon flow of electrical current through said at least one feedstock and said support, which Joule heating is sufficient to melt at least a portion of said at least one feedstock, such that said at least said portion of said at least one feedstock deposits adjacent to said support, wherein a size of said at least said portion of said at least one feedstock is controllable relative to said feedstock during deposition, thereby printing said at least said portion of said 3D object in accordance with said computational representation of said 3D object.

1. An apparatus for printing at least a portion of a three-dimensional (3D) object, comprising:an electrically conductive base for supporting the 3D object during printing;
a wire-feeding mechanism for dispensing wire over the electrically conductive base;
one or more mechanical actuators for controlling a relative position of the electrically conductive base and the wire-feeding mechanism;
a power supply for applying electrical current through the wire and the electrically conductive base while the wire is in electrical contact with the electrically conductive base or a layer of material of the wire previously dispensed over the electrically conductive base, which electrical current is sufficient to melt a portion of the wire; and
circuitry for (i) controlling the one or more mechanical actuators to adjust the relative position of the electrically conductive base and the wire-feeding mechanism, and (ii) using the power supply to apply electrical current through the wire and the electrically conductive base while the wire is in electrical contact with the electrically conductive base or the layer of material of the wire previously dispensed over the electrically conductive base, to generate heat sufficient to melt the portion of the wire, thereby printing the at least the portion of the 3D object adjacent to the electrically conductive base.

1. A method for forming a three-dimensional structure, comprising:(a) bringing a feedstock in contact with a solid object; and
(b) subjecting electrical current to flow from said feedstock to said solid object, or vice versa, while said feedstock and a surface of said solid object are moving relative to one another and while said feedstock is in contact with said surface of said solid object, which flow of said electrical current from said feedstock to said solid object, or vice versa, is sufficient to melt a portion of said feedstock to deposit said portion of said feedstock on said surface of said solid object, thereby forming at least a portion of said three-dimensional structure.
