1. A system for measurement of at least two hemoglobin species in a patient's blood sample by spectroscopy, and measurement
of at least pH of the blood sample by biosensor, for assessing the patient's oxygenation and acid-base status, the system
comprising:
a disposable cartridge for processing a portion of the blood sample, the cartridge comprising a housing having:
a cartridge inlet for engaging one of a syringe containing the blood sample and a capillary adaptor for transferring a portion
of the blood sample from a puncture site of a body part of the patient to the cartridge;

a blood storage conduit having a proximal end close to the cartridge inlet and a distal end away from the cartridge inlet;
a blood storage conduit entrance at the proximal end of the blood storage conduit;
an optical chamber for receiving the blood from the distal end of the blood storage conduit and for measuring the at least
two hemoglobin species;

an optical chamber overflow chamber fluidly connected with the optical chamber;
at least one optical window, wherein at least a portion of the at least one optical window is in alignment with at least a
portion of the optical chamber;

a biosensor conduit for receiving the blood from the optical chamber overflow chamber, the biosensor conduit comprising at
least a portion of a pH biosensor;

an air bladder;
an air bladder exit port, having an arrangement with the blood storage conduit entrance for providing pressurized air to the
blood storage conduit via the blood storage conduit entrance, for urging the blood into the biosensor conduit;

a waste receptacle for receiving liquid waste from the biosensor conduit; and
a waste receptacle vent for relieving pressure in the waste receptacle;
a cap for sealing the cartridge inlet; and,
an analyzer comprising:
an analyzer housing;
a slot in the analyzer housing for receiving the disposable cartridge containing the blood sample;
a source of electromagnetic radiation;
at least one photodetector;
a processor for controlling the analyzer; and
at least two calibration algorithms installed on the processor for measuring the at least two hemoglobin species;
wherein
the system is adjustable between a sealed configuration and an unsealed configuration;
in the sealed configuration, and not in the unsealed configuration, the system comprises a closed air passage connecting the
air bladder exit port to the blood storage conduit entrance for communicating the pressurized air from the air bladder exit
port to the blood storage conduit entrance; and,

in the unsealed configuration, and not in the sealed configuration, the blood storage conduit entrance is configured to receive
the blood.

a disposable ultra-filtration cartridge and a disposable pipetting tip,
the disposable ultra-filtration cartridge including
a top end having a top face, the top face comprising at least one opening, the at least one opening providing an ultra-filtrate
chamber vent;

a bottom end for supporting the disposable ultra-filtration cartridge in an upright position in cooperation with a cartridge
rack;

a filtration chamber comprising (i) a membrane having pores of a predetermined pore size, and dividing the filtration chamber
into a retentate volume on the retentate side of the membrane, and an ultra-filtrate chamber on the filtrate side of the membrane,
(ii) a sample inlet directly connected to the retentate volume for sealably engaging the disposable pipetting tip containing
the sample, (iii) a filtration chamber outlet directly connected to the retentate volume, (iv) the ultra-filtrate chamber
vent directly connected to the ultra-filtrate chamber, and (v) an ultra-filtrate outlet directly connected to the ultra-filtrate
chamber, wherein the ultra-filtrate chamber receives air through the ultra-filtrate chamber vent when the ultra-filtrate flows
out of the ultra-filtrate outlet;

a dead-end channel having an open end and a sealed end, wherein the open end is coincident with the filtration chamber outlet;
and

an ultra-filtrate reservoir at the bottom end for collecting the ultra-filtrate when the ultra-filtrate flows out of the ultra-filtrate
outlet;

wherein
the disposable pipetting tip includes a piston movable in a first direction by applying a force to pressurize trapped air
in the dead-end channel;

such that when the force is relaxed, the piston is movable in a second direction by the pressurized trapped air in the dead-end
channel, the second direction being opposite to the first direction.

8. A filtration assembly for preparing a filtrate or a retentate from a liquid sample, the assembly comprising:
a housing;
an inlet in the housing for receiving the liquid sample;
a filtration chamber comprising a membrane having a retentate side and a filtrate side;
a retentate flow path in the housing comprising the retentate side of the membrane, the retentate flow path comprising a dead-end
channel for trapping air;

a filtrate flow path beginning at the filtrate side of the membrane and terminating at a manually operable filtrate compression
chamber comprising a frictionally engaged plunger for modulating pressure inside the manually operable filtrate compression
chamber;

a manually operable syringe engaged at the inlet for compressing and decompressing air in the dead-end channel to facilitate
filtration of the liquid sample across the membrane; and

an outlet for removing at least one of the filtrate and the retentate from the housing.
